Introducing Nexus for the Joomla Platform! This is a first tentative exploration of how Nexus will
change the Joomla user experience in the administrative back-end of Joomla 1.7 and 2.5 in the
weeks and months to come.

Nexus and the Joomla revolution

postdateiconSaturday, 16 July 2011 19:28 | postauthoriconWritten by Joe Hacobian | PDF | Print | E-mail
This post is to announce the intended release of Nexus 1.0 at the end of Summer 2011.

Nexus is a software project, I started in order to address the usability issues in Joomla's
administrator application. Many people make the mistake of ascribing the Joomla back
end to the simple notion of a poorly-designed, or "skinned" administrator template.

This is somewhat understandable if one is approaching Joomla as a "web site" and thus
parsing Joomla's behavior and appearance from a "web developer's" i.e. A web site builder's
interpretation. Joomla however, is not a "web site", it can manage...

J! Edify, Nexus, and 2011!

postdateiconFriday, 07 January 2011 15:55 | postauthoriconWritten by Joe Hacobian | PDF | Print | E-mail
Wow 2011 is in full swing for us here at Node-0!

There is one big announcement I'd like to make today, and that is the introduction of the new education system
for Joomla! called J! Edify.

Please see the video below for a preview of how J! Edify will behave:

A new Joomla Distribution?

postdateiconWednesday, 20 October 2010 13:48 | postauthoriconWritten by Joe Hacobian | PDF | Print | E-mail
Lately in the couple of weeks after Joomla Day West 2010, there've been many announcements of planned distributions of Joomla.
To my eyes and ears this isn't much different from what's been happening in Linux for years now, what this all simply means for Joomla-ology.com and for Node-0 in general is that either a distribution will be created in-house (the odds of this are pretty high, given the complete commitment to custom software design for Joomla in all other respects).

At the end of the day in my opinion, nothing is changed whether we call it a “distribution” where package or any of...

Functionality VS Usability, and why this is an illusion.

postdateiconSunday, 10 October 2010 23:29 | postauthoriconWritten by Joe Hacobian | PDF | Print | E-mail
In his signature style, Gunner got the Joomla citizenry all riled up and we found ourselves self-organizing along the length of the meeting room between two poles of "usability" or "functionality" as these were the two opposing viewpoints we were asked to ally ourselves with. it seemed to me, that the breakdown was 65% for usability and 35% for functionality (if only our (the U.S. electorate) was as united as the Joomla user base seems to be). I'v marked the walls (via YouTube's annotations) which stand for functionality and the walls which stand for usability (Hint: Tux is on the side of...

Of Users and Experience...

Here is a great presentation by Ron Severdia about what consitutes a good UX and what makes up a bad UX. Watching this I was struck by how many paralells there were between the 2nd half of Ron's presentation and the core architectural principles of Nexus and it's supporting stack of applications. I suppose good design is good design, regardless of coordination between parties. I suppose at some level I basically agree with everything or nearly everything he says here, still.. It's spooky how he wrote "page creator" and the central staging area of Nexus is, in it's essence one giant...

Some things change, some stay the same

postdateiconSunday, 10 October 2010 09:11 | postauthoriconWritten by Joe Hacobian | PDF | Print | E-mail

This is a talk given by Andrew Eddie at Joomla Day West 2010 regarding Joomla's template change for 1.6. Among the points covered were:

  • Template over-rides (if you use them, you're in good shape for 1.6)
  • The new semantic output in Joomla 1.6
  • No more tables! (except for tabulare data of course)
  • Template Styles

Overall it is an evolutionary improvement which is good news for everyone.

If you're from ________ raise your hand and make some noise!!!

postdateiconSaturday, 09 October 2010 01:02 | postauthoriconWritten by Joe Hacobian | PDF | Print | E-mail
This is how the events kicked off of saturday the 2nd of October, after breakfast and some initial circulation in the hall, we were all let into the unconference room, and took up seats in a huge oval. As is typical in an event presented by Allen "Gunner" Gunn, we wouldn't be seated for long. Pretty soon it was audience participation time and we got up to take up ranks along a spectrum of opinions ranging between one polar viewpoint to another, but before I show you that video here is a quick and simple geographic head count of who made it out to Joomla Day West 2010.

Countdown: 30 minutes

T Minus 30 minutes till Joomladay West opening ceremonies, at the Ebay campus in San Jose and I am psyched.

I'm heading up the 101 corridor in San Jose, and getting ready to head out to opening night and make a few friends

as well as meet some old friends and talk to a customer or two.

What's got me really psyched up is the Hackable conference on the 3rd when I'll be showing some of the underlying

concepts behind Nexus and the planned "J! -->" media management stack.

Gotta go, but I'll be checking in very soon with updates and lots mroe info, PDF's, flowcharts, and...
